Rain ruined the series decider between India and the West Indies in Bengaluru on Saturday, as the fifth T20I was abandoned and the five-match series ended 2–2.
The match was called off at 10:16 pm. India had reached 118 for 5 in 7.4 overs in a game already reduced to nine overs per side. There was not enough time left for the West Indies to chase a revised target of 84 before the 10:21 pm cut-off.
Rain had threatened all day. The toss, planned for 6:30 pm, was delayed by more than two hours. When play finally began, the West Indies won the toss and chose to bowl.
India started in explosive fashion. Ishan Kishan smashed 30 off just 10 balls, and India raced to their fastest-ever team fifty in men’s T20Is — in only 2.5 overs. Sanju Samson made 16 off 7 balls, while captain Shreyas Iyer scored 22. Naman Dhir finished unbeaten on 24 off 6 balls.
But the West Indies fought back with regular wickets. Just as the game was heating up, heavy drizzle returned and the umpires called for the covers. The rain never relented.
The washout denied the West Indies their first bilateral series win in India since 2002. It was also a sad end to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium’s return to international cricket after a two-year gap, with thousands of fans waiting hours in the stands.
