More than 100 people were killed and 113 injured when a Sudanese military drone struck a busy market in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur province, on Monday evening, according to Emergency Lawyers, a rights group tracking violence in the country.
What happened in Nyala
The group said the strike hit Tanqong Market in the Dumaya neighbourhood of Nyala, a city controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). It blamed the Sudanese military for the attack and called for an independent investigation, saying the strike turned a civilian marketplace into a scene of mass killing.
Hospital toll, figures unverified
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said Nyala Teaching Hospital received 36 bodies and treated more than 150 wounded patients, including women and children, with shrapnel wounds, severe burns and other injuries. Some patients were brought to the hospital on tuk-tuks and donkey carts as medical teams worked through the night.
The death toll reported by Emergency Lawyers and the RSF-aligned administration’s health minister, who put the figures at 102 killed and 113 injured, has not been independently verified.
A war fought by drones
Drone strikes have become one of the deadliest threats to civilians in Sudan’s civil war, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the RSF. The United Nations says the conflict has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with about 34 million people needing assistance.
