PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah have been appointed to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan. They will fill two vacant seats reserved for parliamentary members from the treasury benches.

The nominations were made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. They were made under Article 175A of the Constitution. The appointment notification was issued with the approval of Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, who chairs the commission.

Vacancies filled

The seats fell vacant after the resignations of PPP Senator Farooq H. Naek and PML-N member Aftab Sheikh. Bilawal will represent the National Assembly in the commission. Rana Sanaullah will represent the Senate.

Sharif, as leader of the house in the National Assembly, nominated the member for the lower house. Dar, who leads the government in the Senate, nominated the member for the upper house. Both nominations followed the procedure laid down in the Constitution.

Role of the commission

The Judicial Commission plays a central role in appointing judges. It considers appointments to the Supreme Court and the high courts. It also deals with the Federal Shariat Court and the Federal Constitutional Court.

The commission also evaluates the performance of high court judges. Its decisions shape the makeup of the superior judiciary. Officials said the new members will take part in upcoming meetings of the body. The next meeting is expected to consider pending judicial appointments. Observers say the new members bring strong parliamentary experience. Their role will be important in the coming months.
