A parliamentary committee has approved a new security framework for CPEC projects. The decision was taken at a meeting in Islamabad on October 16. The committee was chaired by the planning minister.
The framework sets new rules for the protection of Chinese workers and project sites. It also creates a joint monitoring system between federal and provincial agencies.
Key features
Under the new plan, a special security division will guard all major CPEC routes. Drones and cameras will watch sensitive sites around the clock. A hotline will connect project managers with security officials.
The planning minister said the safety of workers was the top priority. He said past attacks had slowed down important projects. He added that China had been taken into confidence.
Opposition’s questions
Opposition members asked about the cost of the new system. They said the government should share the full details with parliament. The minister promised a detailed briefing next month.
Officials said the framework would be reviewed every six months. They said it would also apply to new projects under CPEC phase two.
