The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has decided to seek the National Assembly’s approval for the emergency imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s parliamentary group in Islamabad. A resolution supporting the move is expected to be tabled in the house.

President Asif Ali Zardari summoned separate sessions of the National Assembly and Senate on October 13. The sessions were called under Article 54(1) of the Constitution. Lawmakers are expected to debate the federal government’s intervention in the province. The sessions will give all parties a chance to present their views.

Rana Sanaullah defends the move

The prime minister’s aide on political affairs, Rana Sanaullah, defended the government’s decision. He said action in the province was necessary. He added that the fight against terrorism had to be won.

Sanaullah accused the PTI-led provincial government of failing to cooperate against militancy. He said the government was confident the situation would improve. He also praised the Balochistan government for its role in counterterrorism efforts.

PTI rejects the decision

PTI leaders have strongly opposed the emergency and governor’s rule. They call the move unconstitutional and politically driven. The party says it will respond through legal and political means.

According to reports, formal ratification of the emergency may take place on a later day. The matter was not part of the initial agenda for the October 13 sessions. The outcome of any vote remains uncertain. Party leaders said they were in contact with allied parties for support. The government says the Constitution fully backs its decision.
