The opposition has asked National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to issue production orders for arrested members of the house. The request was made during the ongoing sessions of parliament. Opposition leaders said detained lawmakers must be allowed to attend proceedings.
PTI leader Ali Zafar said emergency powers should not be used as a political weapon. He warned against the misuse of constitutional provisions. Another opposition member, Raja Nasir Abbas, said the government’s actions of October 11 violated the Constitution.
Heated debate in the Senate
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar defended the government’s position in the Senate. He said the PTI’s refusal to replace the KP chief minister led to the dismissal of its provincial government. He added that the decision followed the Constitution.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told the house the government had evidence of contacts between terrorists and some PTI members. He said financial transactions were also under investigation. He insisted the action was taken to prevent loss of life. He said the government would share more details with the house.
What production orders mean
A production order allows a detained lawmaker to attend parliament. The speaker issues the order on the request of the parliamentary party leader. Custody officials then bring the member to the house for the session.
After the proceedings end, the member is taken back into custody. No decision on the opposition’s request had been announced. The opposition says attending the house is the right of every elected member. It says the speaker should protect this right without delay.
