Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI chatbot, has filed to list its shares on the stock market, in what could become one of the biggest technology listings ever. The filing is being seen as a major test of whether the AI boom can deliver real profits.
Reports say Anthropic’s revenue surged about 1,300% year-on-year in the first half of the year, as businesses rushed to use its AI models. The company is one of the world’s leading AI firms, competing directly with OpenAI.
News of the filing lifted technology shares on Tuesday. Asian tech stocks rallied, with Seoul briefly jumping more than 4% on strong gains in chipmakers SK hynix and Samsung, while Tokyo rose around 2% on gains in Kioxia, Advantest and SoftBank. Wall Street’s Nasdaq and S&P 500 also moved higher.
Investors have poured huge sums into AI companies, but questions are growing about when that spending will turn into profits. A weak reception for Anthropic’s listing could dent enthusiasm across the sector, while a strong debut could revive it after a shaky second half of the year.
Anthropic’s filing also flagged risks that are specific to the AI industry. The company warned that if its models cause harm, whether through misuse by malicious actors or failures of its safety guardrails, its business could suffer.
The filing comes after a string of reports about AI systems behaving in unexpected and harmful ways, which has added to global worries about the power of advanced AI tools.
For now, markets have welcomed the news. Traders will watch the listing closely, because it may show whether investors still believe the AI boom is worth its trillion-dollar price tag.
