Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is visiting Tehran today. A Pakistani official and Iranian media confirmed the trip.

Pakistan has played a key role between the United States and Iran this year. It has carried messages between the two sides and pushed for calm in the region.

The visit follows talks held in the summer. In those meetings, Munir and Iranian leaders spoke about ways to stop the fighting from growing.

They also discussed the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most important routes for oil and gas.

The two sides also talked about how to bring the conflict to an end more quickly.

A peace framework agreed in June fell apart in July. Since then, tensions in the region have stayed high, and shipping through the strait has suffered.

Pakistan’s role is delicate. It has defence ties with Saudi Arabia and a long border with Iran. Any wider war would hurt Pakistan directly.

Officials have not shared a full schedule for today’s meetings. No agreements have been announced so far.

Russia’s foreign minister is also expected in Iran. The visits show that several countries are now working to stop the crisis from spreading further.
