France saw massive protests on Friday. Between 550,000 and 800,000 people took to the streets across the country, according to different estimates.

The protests turned violent in some cities. Luxury stores were looted in Paris and Bordeaux. In Limoges, protesters set fire to the town hall building.

Police arrested more than 1,200 people during the unrest. Security forces used tear gas and water cannons to control the crowds in several areas.

The demonstrations were called by trade unions and student groups. They are protesting against the government’s economic policies and planned reforms.

The French government has called for calm. Officials say they are open to talks but will not tolerate violence and damage to property.
