Three people were killed and about 30 others were wounded in at least six separate shootings near major university campuses in the United States over the Halloween weekend. The shootings happened during a weekend of Halloween, homecoming and football rivalry events.

What happened over the weekend

The shootings were separate incidents in different states, not one single attack. They happened near college campuses and in college towns, where large crowds had gathered for Halloween parties, homecoming celebrations and football games. Police in each city are investigating their own case.

Boulder house party shooting

At the University of Colorado in Boulder, a 19-year-old student was killed and another student was critically injured at a large Halloween house party. Police shut down the party at about 11.30 pm after hundreds of students gathered there. About 90 minutes later, police said two men tried to force their way into the house. Police later identified two suspects.

Newark, Indiana and Illinois shootings

In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot late on Saturday night on a packed Main Street near the University of Delaware. Costumed students fled as gunfire broke out at about 11 pm. One of the injured was a 20-year-old university student, who remains in serious condition. In Bloomington, Indiana, seven people were injured in a shooting on Kirkwood Avenue near Indiana University at about 1.30 am on Sunday. Police said the victims, aged 17 to 27, were not university students and had come to celebrate Halloween. Near Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, a 19-year-old woman was killed and seven others were wounded.

Birmingham and Michigan State shootings

In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight others were wounded in shootings after the annual Magic City Classic football game on Saturday night. Near Michigan State University in East Lansing, a person wearing a Michael Myers mask opened fire and wounded one person, and another person was wounded in a separate shooting at about 12.30 am on Sunday.

The wider Halloween weekend also saw deadly shootings in Dallas, where four people were killed and 15 others were injured in the Deep Ellum nightlife area.
