A 15-year-old orphan boy has died in Multan after he was run over by a car. Police say the driver was the contractor he worked for. The contractor has been arrested.

The boy, Waseem Abbas, came from Muzaffargarh. He lived at an orphanage in Multan run by a charity.

Police said the orphanage sent Waseem to contractor Touqeer Nazir seven days ago. He was to learn electrical work and build a future for himself.

On Monday, Waseem left the work at the contractor’s house in a private housing society. Police say he wanted to go home.

What happened next was caught on CCTV cameras. Police said Nazir first chased the boy on foot. He then followed him in a car, along with another man, Amjad Ali.

The speeding car hit Waseem during the chase. The impact threw him into the gate of a house. He died on the spot from a head injury.

Nazir told police the boy would leave work without asking. He said he drove after him because he wanted to stop him and catch him.

Police checked whether the boy had stolen anything. They said the early investigation found no proof of theft.

Police have seized the car and registered a murder case. The state itself is the complainant in the case. Some staff of the orphanage have also been held for questioning.

Multan’s city police chief said other children from the same orphanage had been sent to the contractor before for training. Police are now looking into how the children were placed with him.

Waseem’s body was taken to Nishtar Hospital. He was buried in Muzaffargarh on Tuesday.

He has left behind a mother, a brother and a sister. His family has demanded that those responsible be punished.
