The Sindh Assembly has passed a resolution demanding a fair share of Indus river water. The resolution was adopted unanimously on October 16. Members from all parties supported it.
The resolution says Sindh is not getting its due share under the 1991 Water Accord. It asks the federal government to release the province’s full share at once.
Farmers’ concerns
Members said farmers in lower Sindh were facing a water shortage. They said cotton and rice crops had been damaged this year. One member said tail-end farmers had received no water for weeks.
The irrigation minister said the province would raise the issue at the next IRSA meeting. He said Sindh’s case was strong and backed by data.
Call for new accord
Some members demanded a new water accord. They said the 1991 agreement was old and unfair. The resolution asks the centre to start talks on a revised formula.
The chief minister said water was a matter of survival for Sindh. He promised to take up the issue with the prime minister personally.
