The JUI-F has announced a protest schedule against the emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Party chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman made the announcement at a press conference in Peshawar on October 16.

The party will hold rallies in all major cities of the province next week. A shutter-down strike is planned for October 25. Rehman said the emergency was against the will of the people.

Rehman’s demands

The JUI-F chief demanded an immediate end to the emergency. He asked for fresh elections in the province. He said his party would not accept any decision made under emergency rule.

Rehman also criticised the federal government. He said the centre was treating KP like a colony. He warned that the protests would spread to other provinces if the demand was ignored.

Government’s response

The information minister said the government respected the right to protest. But he said no one would be allowed to block roads or damage property. He asked the JUI-F to raise its concerns in parliament.

Political observers said the JUI-F’s street power in KP could pressure the government. They noted that the party had a strong network of madrasa students in the province.
