The PPP and MQM-P have agreed to form a joint committee on local government powers in Karachi. The decision was announced after a meeting in Karachi on October 16. Leaders of both parties attended the meeting.
The committee will decide how powers will be shared between the mayor and the provincial government. It will submit its report within 30 days. Both sides called the talks positive.
Long-standing dispute
The MQM-P has long demanded that the Karachi mayor get control of water, transport and waste management. The party says the city cannot improve without these powers. The PPP has said some departments need provincial control.
MQM-P leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said his party wanted real change, not just promises. He said Karachi’s people were tired of waiting. PPP leader Saeed Ghani said his party was serious about solving the city’s problems.
What comes next
The committee will have four members from each party. It will meet twice a week. Officials said the first meeting would be held next Monday.
Observers said the agreement was a rare sign of cooperation. But they warned that past committees on the same issue had failed to reach a final decision.
