WFP Warns of 'Humanitarian Catastrophe' in Yemen

The UN World Food Programme has warned of a possible humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen, where fighting is blocking aid delivery. More than 18 million people face acute food insecurity, the agency said.

Some 2.2 million children under five are acutely malnourished, including 500,000 suffering from the most life-threatening form, according to the WFP. About 800,000 people are now out of reach of aid workers.

Recent monitoring found that nearly 75 per cent of households in accessible areas could not meet their basic food needs. The agency called it a record number for this year.

Aid Operations Disrupted

The WFP said its offices have been breached and food stocks lost as fighting cuts off supply routes. It has still managed to help more than 115,000 newly displaced people in areas it can reach.

The agency warned that without new funding, it will have to cut assistance from November. It needs 268 million dollars to sustain operations through 2027.

Staff Detained

Thirty-seven WFP staff are among 72 UN personnel detained by Houthi authorities, the agency said. The UN chief has repeatedly called for their immediate release.

Officials said safe and lasting humanitarian access is critical. Without it, millions more could go hungry in the months ahead, the WFP warned.

The crisis in Yemen has lasted for years, driven by conflict and economic collapse. Aid workers said only a lasting peace and steady funding can end the suffering of millions.

Donor countries have been urged to step up their support. The WFP said every dollar counts when millions of lives are at stake, and delays in funding cost lives.
