The Pakistani rupee stayed largely stable against the US dollar this week, trading near Rs 277 in the interbank market. In the open market, the dollar changed hands between Rs 277.50 and Rs 280.25.

Dealers said demand and supply of dollars remained balanced. Remittance inflows and export earnings helped meet the market’s needs, while import payments kept some pressure on.

What affects the rupee

The rupee’s value depends on imports, exports, remittances and debt payments. A stable currency helps businesses plan better and keeps import costs in check.

Importers of machinery, fuel and raw materials watch the rate closely. A weaker rupee raises their costs, which can push up prices for consumers.

Outlook

Currency dealers expect the rupee to stay in a narrow range in the short term. They said continued remittance flows and stable reserves should support the local currency.

The gap between interbank and open market rates stayed small, which dealers called a healthy sign. A wide gap often points to pressure building up in the currency market.

Overseas Pakistanis also watch the rate closely because it decides how many rupees their families receive. A stable rate gives them confidence to send money through official channels.

Analysts said the central bank’s comfortable reserve position gives it room to smooth out sharp moves. They do not expect any sudden fall in the rupee unless oil prices jump much higher.

Small businesses that import goods said a stable rupee helps them set prices with confidence. They hope the calm trend continues through the rest of the year.
