Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Sehat Card programme now covers around 11 million families. Each family can get free treatment worth up to Rs1 million per year at empanelled hospitals across Pakistan. The scheme is linked to CNICs, so no separate card is needed.

The programme covers hospital admissions, surgeries, emergency care and maternity services. It has also funded highly specialised procedures. Officials say it has paid for 235 kidney transplants, 80 liver transplants and 71 cochlear implants for eligible patients.

Closure rumours rejected

This week, the KP government rejected claims that the Health Card programme was being closed. A fact-check statement said reports attributed to officials were unverified and fabricated. The public was urged not to share such claims without checking official sources.

Health officials confirmed the scheme is running normally at public and private hospitals. Balances are renewed every year for eligible families.

A model for the country

Families praise the scheme for removing fear of hospital bills. A serious illness no longer means selling land or jewellery. Patients say they now visit hospitals early instead of waiting until conditions worsen.

Private hospitals also benefit from steady payments. The government pays their bills on time for treated patients. This partnership has added thousands of beds to the public system.

Officials say the renewal process is simple. Families only need a valid CNIC to stay covered. Hospital counters help anyone who faces a problem with verification.

Experts call the KP scheme a model for portable public health insurance. By covering costly treatments, it stops families from falling into debt over medical bills. Other provinces are watching its progress closely.
